When I think about Maine, I am reminded of rocky beaches, the cold salty ocean, lighthouses, lobster, and blueberries. In fact, the wild blueberry is the official fruit of Maine and is as much a symbol of the state as the lobster or the lighthouse. Some people like to say that the beacon in the lighthouse and the promise of lobster bring people to Maine but its the wild blueberries that people always remember: deep blue pea-sized fruit bursting with sweetness and what can only be described as that wild blueberry flavor. The crust of the blueberry turnover stands on its own and also deserves an award as this melt-in-your-mouth pastry relies on a timeless recipe that calls for wheat flour, butter, water, salt and sugar – that’s it. The filling – equally as delicious with a thick blueberry lava-like consistency - contains wild blueberries, sugar, water, lemon juice, corn starch, and salt. The two together make for one delectable snack or dessert.
A rectangular shaped pie somewhat reminiscent of McDonald’s hand-held “apple pie” (in shape only), Gagne’s Blueberry Turnovers are available at Whole Foods in the frozen food section. Four scrumptious turnovers for $5.99. Store the frozen box in the freezer until ready to use. When dessert is needed, simply bake the turnovers on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet at 425 degrees for about 25 minutes.
My husband prefers his warm blueberry turnover with vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt while I enjoy mine in its simplest form: warm out of the oven.
